The retail interior of Queens Plaza is grand and spacious. A void between the two levels required something special.
AAR and Bert Flugelman were commissioned to conceive a design that would not only marry the two levels; but also contribute to the grand proportions of the centre. The area has an overall ceiling height in excess of 8mt.
As one of Australia’s eminent senior sculptors’; Bert was able to achieve a spectacular result using his most favoured material; polished stainless steel. Leaf like forms grow like a magic bean stalk between the two levels. The mirror finish of the polished stainless steel reflects the centre’s daily activities.
The major stainless steel sculpture by Bert Flugelman was installed early 2007 into the retail area at Queens Plaza, Brisbane. The sculpture is constructed of 2 and 3mm 304 grade stainless steel and polished to a mirror finish. The installation consists of seven individual pieces that were welded and bolted together on site in Brisbane. The final scale of the work was over 11meters in height from the bottom and top fixing points.
The fabrication commenced late 2006 and was installed early 2007. The production time line was approximately a seven month process from maquette presentation and sign off; through to the finished installation.
