Bullenah-Ballina Stephen Newton

Ballina Fair Shopping Plaza, NSW

In 2007 Stephen was commissioned by the Ballina Fair Shopping Plaza to provide a work for the outdoor food court.

Constructed of red iron bark hardwood with stainless steel supports; the installation incorporates environmental and indigenous references.

The sculptures title refers to the connection between people and place through language. Bullenah is the aboriginal name for the area – meaning “place where oysters are plentiful”. Ballina is the settlers interpretation of the indigenous word. The contour map is a scaled interpretation of the Ballina region showing the Richmond River, North Creek, North Creek canal, Shores Bay, northern lakes and the coastline as it exists today.
